Pope Francis foregoes traditional papal summer retreat

Vatican City, June 6 - In a break from papal tradition, Pope Francis is foregoing the usual lengthy vacation retreat to the lakeside summer residence Castelgondolfo, south of Rome, the Vatican spokesman said on Thursday. It was not his habit to take vacations when he was archbishop of Buenos Aires either, said Vatican Spokesman Father Federico Lombardi at the announcement of the Argentinian pope's provisional summer agenda. Lombardi clarified that the pope has no current plans to leave his suite in the Vatican's Saint Martha's guesthouse, where he took up residence rather than the more lavish and spacious papal apartments. The pope's general audiences of July 3, 10, 17 and 31 will be suspended, however, and Francis will go to Castelgandolfo for the recitation of the Angelus on Sunday, July 14.
