Berlusconi fails in bid to recuse Milan judge

(see related story) Rome, June 4 - Italy's supreme Court of Cassation on Tuesday rejected a petition from Silvio Berlusconi's lawyers to recuse one of three Milan judges who handed the ex-premier a one-year prison term for involvement in the publication of an illegally obtained wiretap. Berlusconi's lawyers had said there were grounds to doubt the impartiality Maria Teresa Guadagnino, as she was also among the judges in a separate trial that ended with the ex-premier receiving a four-year prison term for fraud at his media empire. If the Cassation has upheld the petition, it would have invalidated the ruling in the wiretaps trial.
