Serie A club in talks with former France coach

Soccer: Roma on right road to hiring Blanc, says Deschamps

Rome, June 4 - Didier Deschamps said Tuesday that he knew AS Roma were in talks to hire his predecessor as France boss Laurent Blanc, adding that he thought a deal was close. Roma are set to break up with coach Aurelio Andreazzoli after enduring a disappointing Serie A campaign with a talented young squad, finishing outside the European qualification slots, in sixth place. They have set their sights on Blanc after making an unsuccessful bid for Massimiliano Allegri, who is set to stay at AC Milan next season. "I know that they are on the right road," Deschamps, who was Blanc's teammate i 1998 World Cup-winning France national team, told a press conference ahead of a friendly against Uruguay in Montevideo. "I know that Laurent wants to get back on the bench, to have a new opportunity to coach a team. "Roma are a good club, although there is special pressure. If it's confirmed, I'll be very happy for him". Blanc won the French top flight and the French League Cup with Bordeaux in 2009 during a three-year stint at the club. He has not working since stepping down as France coach after his side lost 2-0 to Spain in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012.
