Anti-Mafia police crack down on Palermo 'funeral monopoly'

Palermo, June 4 - Anti-mafia police on Tuesday confiscated 27 million euros in money and assets from a family accused of running a monopoly on burial services at Palermo's main cemetery. The seized items, which belonged to brothers Giovanni and Salvatore Lo Cicero, included land, villas, houses, cars, businesses, banking accounts and a light airplane. Police said the men had a stranglehold on all activities at the Santa Maria dei Rotoli graveyard, from building tombs and headstones to controlling mortuary and funeral services.
