Beekeeper removes mask, cups queen in bare hands

Beehive rescued from Florence basilica

Florence, June 4 - A beehive has been rescued from Florence's Santa Maria Novella church after tourists alerted authorities. The swarm, which was nested in an exterior wall of the city's first great basilica, was removed by a beekeeper who used a crane to access the upper reaches of the Medieval building. After putting the bees to sleep with smoke, the beekeeper was applauded by onlookers when he removed his mask and cupped the queen bee in his bare hands.
