Soccer: Gattuso to coach Palermo says chairman

Rome, June 3 - Former AC Milan and Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, sacked as player-manager by Swiss club Sion last month, is set to become coach of Palermo, the chairman of the newly relegated Serie B side said Monday. "I really really like Gattuso and he'll be the next coach of Palermo," said 'coach-eater' Maurizio Zamparini, whose dizzy sackings and rehirings in the just-ended campaign were widely seen as contributing to the Sicilian outfit's fall from Serie A for the first time since 2004. Asked in Milan if he was in touch with the former midfield spoiler known as 'Ringhio' (Snarler), Zamparini said "He's going to bring me some fish tomorrow and cook it for me. He's got a fishmonger's shop near here, in Gallarate, where the offices of my (Emmezeta department-store) group are". No amount of hirings and firings by the fiery Zamaprini were able to save Palermo from the drop last month. Zamparini sacked incumbent coach Giuseppe Sannino just three games into the season, replacing him with Gian Piero Gasperini. He couldn't turn things around, and was replaced by Alberto Malesani in February. Three weeks later, Malesani was fired and Gasperini returned, though he was refired two games later and Sannino was brought back. Despite a late rally under Sannino, it wasn't enough for a side that has never adequately replaced the players they've sold over recent seasons, including Javier Pastore, Salvatore Sirigu, Antonio Nocerino and Edinson Cavani. On Monday Zamparini said Gattuso would be hired "just as soon as I've sorted things out with Sannino". Sion sacked Gattuso May 13 after a poor run culminated in a 5-0 defeat to San Gallo. Gattuso, 35, was appointed coach in February. Sion Chairman Christian Constantin brought in eight youth team players until the end of the season, replacing Gattuso and seven other regulars after the club racked up 10 points in 11 games and were knocked out of the Swiss Cup.
