Road-maintenance plan to fight recession

Rome, June 3 - Italy is to launch an "extraordinary" road-maintenance plan to try to help lift the economy out of recession, Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi said Monday. Lupi said he had asked maintenance company ANAS to put out 100 projects to tender. He said the work would be worth 250 million euros and would be launched in the next three months. Lupi said the government was also planning work on schools and recalled that money was already lined up for the rail network. Italy is in its longest recession for 20 years having suffered seven straight quarterly GDP drops.
