Italian electoral laws under review after last national election

M5s calls for a reduction in legal voting age to 16 years

Rome, May 29 - The legal age for voting should be lowered to 16 years, the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) said Wednesday. The group has tabled a motion in the Senate suggesting reforms to electoral laws. Currently, Italians must be 18 to vote for a member of the Chamber of Deputies, and 25 to vote for senators. "Our goal is first to allow young citizens to participate," in voting, said M5S Senator Nicola Morra. The Italian government is weighing major changes to the country's voting laws after the last national election ended in chaos.
