Italy civil service under pay and hiring freeze until 2015

Minister says resources lacking, unemployment bigger priority

Italy civil service under pay and hiring freeze until 2015

Rome, May 28 - Italian civil servants are unlikely to see changes to their monthly pay until at least 2015, according to Civil Service Minister Gianpiero D'Alia. On Tuesday D'Alia said: "I hope the renewal of contracts can be unblocked starting in 2015, but it depends on how the country's economy is going". The freeze in civil service hiring until at least the end of 2014 is due to "lack of resources" because the government has other priorities, like tackling unemployment, D'Alia said. He added that he was aware of the fact that this situation was "a great sacrifice for civil servants, but it is part of the sacrifices that all Italians are making".
