Naples, May 27 - Roughly 50 prison guards in Naples formed a human chain in protest of a personnel shortage and overcrowding on Monday. The guards linked arms at the Poggioreale prison to raise awareness of some 200 positions that they say need to be filled in the surrounding Campania region. On the same day, the European Court of Human Rights rejected Italy's appeal against a sentence condemning Rome for the state of Italian jails. The court confirmed that Italy must find a solution to prison overcrowding by the end of the year and pay damages to inmates affected by the poor conditions.
