Istat releases mixed economic snapshot of Italy

(see previous) Rome, May 24 - Istat painted a mixed picture with latest figures on Italy's economic situation released on Friday. Consumer confidence, after oscillating over the last month, fell overall to 85.9 in May compared to 86.3 in April, due to a worsening economic outlook and growing pessimism about the future. Contractual wages in April grew 0.3% over March and by 1.4% on an annual basis, marking the first time since August 2010 that it outpaced inflation, which sank to 1.1% in April. But 51 expired national labour contracts in Italy - affecting 5.9 million employees - awaited renewal in April. The Italian statistics agency said 15 of the expired contracts - pertaining to 2.9 million workers - belonged to Italy's public administration. The number increased compared to March, when nine contracts expired.
