Beatification ceremony being prepared for anti-Mafia priest

Palermo, May 24 - Preparations are underway Friday for the beatifying ceremony of the anti-Mafia priest Father Giuseppe "Pino" Puglisi, killed by the mob in 1993. Puglisi's remains were transported in April to Palermo's main cathedral where Saturday's beatification ceremony will take place. Palermo city authorities expect 80,000 people to attend the ceremony for the popular priest who was gunned down by the Mafia on his 56th birthday in the Brancaccio neighbourhood. "The martyrdom of Father Puglisi is a call for us to remember that the Church must be on the frontline", Cardinal Paolo Romeo, Archbishop of Palermo, said. "Don Puglisi has become a worldwide example of faith and social commitment," Romeo said. Pope Francis has delegated Cardinal Salvatore De Giorgi to attend the ceremony in Palermo for the Holy See.
