Murder-suicide believed to be crime of passion

March on Friday to remember woman murdered near Padua

Padua, May 23 - A march organized by Veneto women's center Progetti Donna on Friday will remember 49-year-old Silvana Cassol, murdered by her husband, 38-year-old Gabriele Ghersina on Wednesday in their home near Padua. Ghersina, a police officer from the town of Cadoneghe, shot his wife first then himself with his service-issued pistol in a murder-suicide that police believe was a crime of passion. The dead couple was discovered when officers went to the policeman's home after he did not show up for his shift. "Femicide and violence against women is a phenomenon so complex that it cannot be reduced to a matter of numbers, nor can it be considered a temporary emergency," said a release by the center. Cassol's murder is the latest in a series of violent female deaths to have plagued Italy. A third of women in Italy reported being victims of serious domestic violence, according to a 2012 UN report citing data from Italian statistics agency ISTAT.
