Pope to visit Assisi on St. Francis' feast day, October 4

Perugia, May 23 - In celebration of the saint he took his name after, the pope will visit the Umbrian town of Assisi on October 4 in honor of Saint Francis. "At your request, Pope Francis intends to travel to Assisi as a pilgrim on October 4, the birthplace of St. Francis," a Vatican communique' signed by its Substitute for General Affairs, Monsignor Angelo Becciu said. The yearly celebration includes a lighting of torches by pilgrims and clergy, which Pope Francis will participate in, said the Vatican. "We thank you for your earnest anticipation (of our arrival)," the letter said. The pope is the first pontiff ever to take his name from St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis, Italy and Assisi's patron, is known as the protector of the poor and humble. The pontiff's new coat of arms was prepared by St. Francis Basilica's eldest friar, Father Vladimiro Penev and is placed above the church's main entry.
