Italy has Europe's highest rate of idle young people

Rome, May 22 - Recession-hit Italy has the highest proportion of young people doing "nothing", with almost a third of 15-to-29-year-olds not in education, employment or training (NEET), Istat said on Wednesday. The national statistics agency said in its annual report that 2.25 million 15-to-29-year-olds were NEETs in 2012, 23.9% of the total, an increase of 100,000 on 2011. The percentage of people in this age group considered part of the workforce - in that they are not in education and are actively seeking a job - who are unemployed was 25.2% in 2012, compared to 20.5% in 2011. The number of 15-to-29-year-olds who were studying in 2012 was stable at around four million, 41.5%.
