Bill slashing mafia collusion sentence withdrawn

'Never drafted at party level' says Berlusconi's PdL

Bill slashing mafia collusion sentence withdrawn

Rome, May 21 - The Senate whip for ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) party said Tuesday that a bill aiming to slash the penalty for a form of mafia collusion would be withdrawn. "I invited Senator Guido Compagna (who drafted the bill) to withdraw it, and I received precise assurances in this regard," said Renato Schifani. PdL Deputy Whip Giuseppe Esposito stressed that the bill, which caused an outcry from the center left and law-and-justice activists, "was drafted by Compagna" and not at the party level. Compagna is a member of the GAL party, which is allied with the center-right PdL.
