Nearly nine million Italians in labor difficulty, study says

Rome, May 20 - The number of Italy's workforce suffering from some form of labor difficulty, from underemployment to unemployment, is nearly nine million, a new study reported Monday. According to the Ires research group, who was commissioned by the CGIL labor union confederation, 4.57 million Italians are either unemployed, have given up looking for a job or are receiving unemployment benefits for temporary layoffs as of the last quarter of 2012. In addition, 4.17 million people are employed under temporary or part-time contracts. According to forecasts released earlier this month by national statistics agency Istat, unemployment will rise to 11.9% this year, up 1.2% in 2012, and climb further still in 2014 to reach 12.3%. Youth employment reached 38.4% in March, 3.2% higher than the same month in 2012, according to Istat
