Tennis: Sharapova pulls out in Rome, Errani in semis

Rome, May 17 - Reigning champion Maria Sharapova pulled out of the WTA tournament in Rome before her quarter-final against Italy's Sara Errari for unspecified "physical problems", the Italian Tennis Federation (FIT) said Friday. The withdrawal means that in-form Errani goes straight into the semis without having to play to become the first Italian woman to reach the last four of the Rome event in 28 years. Errani, a clay-court specialist who was runner-up at the French Open last year and is the world's top-ranked doubles player along with her partner Roberta Vinci, will enter the top five of the WTA singles rankings next week.
