Seven arrests in corruption investigation near Milan

Milan, May 14 - Police near Milan on Tuesday morning arrested seven people accused of having links to organized crime. The arrests include some local entrepreneurs and public officials and the charges include corruption and fraud in public procurement contracts. The investigation which lead to the arrests helped police uncover direct and indirect links between some of the arrested entrepreneurs and local operatives of the Calabrian-based 'Ndrangheta crime syndicate who are already at the center of another investigation, called 'Infinite', and lead to the discovery of a well-established system of corruption in awarding public works projects. The investigation, which lead to Tuesday's arrests, began in 2012, when officials of the town government of Desio, near Milan, asked Carabinieri police to investigate the process which lead to the awarding of certain public works contracts by the town government's own offices. 'Ndrangheta (from a Greek word meaning 'heroism' or virtue') once lived in the twin shadow of its Sicilian cousin Cosa Nostra and the Camorra in Naples, but now operates widely throughout Italy and has stretched operations into Europe.
