Pope calls indigenous rights group in Argentina

Buenos Aires, May 13 - A human rights group in Argentina said on Monday that it recently received a telephone call from Pope Francis expressing his support for the South American ethnic indigenous group Qom, inhabitants of the country's Gran Chaco region. Gustavo Vera, head of the La Alameda foundation based in Buenos Aires told local media that the pope said "I am praying for the Qom and I hope their pleas are heard". The chief of the indigenous community based primarily in the provinces of Formosa and Chaco, Felix Diaz, has launched a media campaign to ask for "respect and justice". Diaz said that the Qom are "victims of violence by the provincial authorities" and that they would continue to "resist".
