Mafia-seized property given to murdered priest's parish

Palermo, May 9 - Palermo Mayor Leoluca Orlando signed an authorization on Thursday to hand over property confiscated from the Sicilian Mafia to the parish of murdered priest Father Giuseppe "Pino" Puglisi, killed by the mob in 1993. Puglisi was gunned down by the Mafia on his 56th birthday in the Brancaccio neighbourhood of Palermo, where the property was confiscated. The parish of San Gaetano will use the property, first seized in 1995, "not only as a place of worship, but also a place for socializing and gathering for the whole neighborhood," parish priest Father Maurizio Francoforte said. Preparations are underway for the process of beatifying the anti-Mafia priest Puglisi, whose remains were transported to Palermo's main cathedral in April in preparation for the May 25 beatification ceremony. "Don Puglisi has become a worldwide example of faith and social commitment," Cardinal Paolo Romeo, Archbishop of Palermo, said.
