Big bank computers add turbo power to cancer research

Milan, May 8 - Cancer researchers in Milan launched a landmark collaboration with Italy's largest banks on Wednesday that harnesses the banks' supercomputing muscle to accelerate data analysis for DNA-sequencing. A new cloud computing platform called Cloud4Care enables cancer researchers at the Mario Negri Institute in Milan to access the supercomputing infrastructure of Intesa Sanpaolo and Unicredit banks as well as financial technology giant SIA, to execute heavy data-crunching through secure channels from Internet browsers. The new system allows cancer researchers to draw on a system whose processing power is 400 times more powerful than their own. During the initial testing-phase, Mario Negri researchers found the new system reduced processing-time for a four gigabyte operation from two hours to 10 minutes, and increased the precision of results by 100 times.
