Louvre world's most visited museum in 2012

Rome, May 7 - With nearly 10 million visits, the Louvre museum in Paris again topped the rankings of the world's most popular museums in 2012, Italy's Giornale dell'Arte's annual classification reported on Tuesday. Running a distant second was the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) in New York City, with 6.1 million visits, followed by London's British Museum with 5.5 million. Museums in Italy and Vatican City saw numbers decline. The Vatican museums slipped from fifth to seventh place worldwide, while total museum visits in all of Italy sank to 10.1 million in 2012, down from 10.7 million 2011. Italy's most popular museum was the Uffizi in Florence, with 1.7 million visits, followed by the Doge's Palace of Venice, with 1.2 million.
