'Palermo command structure razed'

21 Mafia arrests

Palermo, May 8 - Italian police on Wednesday arrested 21 Mafia suspects in a big operation they said had "razed" Cosa Nostra's command structure in the Sicilian capital Palermo. Among those placed under investigation was a mayor of a local town who earned 22% of the vote for the regionalist northern Italian Northern League in February's general election. Assets worth some 30 million euros were seized in an operation police said showed Cosa Nostra was "returning in a significant way" to the drugs trade from South America which has been largely taken over by the Sicilian Mafia's now bigger and richer cousin, 'Ndrangheta.
