'Italy is not racist,' says first black minister

(see previous)Rome, May 3 - Recently appointed Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge said on Friday that Italy is not a racist country, however it lacks a "consciousness of others". Italy has a well-rooted culture of hospitality...but does not see diversity as a resource," Kyenge said. Since her appointment in Premier Enrico Letta's left-right government last Sunday, Kyenge has suffered racist attacks from the anti-immigrant Northern League and anonymous bigots. "I learned much from these attacks," Kyenge said at her first press conference since her swearing in.
