Rome, May 2 - Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno said on Thursday that Rome will not be using Equitalia anymore to collect taxes as of July 1. The mayor said the city government will vote Thursday "on a measure making Rome leave Equitalia starting July 1". Alemanno, who is running for a second term as mayor at local elections on May 26-27, has launched an online referendum asking Romans whether they prefer their taxes to be collected by an agency selected through a public tender or directly by the public administration. Equitalia is extremely unpopular among many Italians who accuse it of using harsh methods to collect overdue taxes and fines.
