Rome security tightened ahead of May 1 annual music concert

(ANSA) – Rome, April 30 – Security measures are being stepped up in Rome ahead of the May 1 annual holiday concert, traditionally held in Piazza San Giovanni in the Italian capital, following a shoot out that left two policemen injured on Sunday. A lone gunman wounded the two officers, one seriously, in front of the premier's palace (Palazzo Chigi) while the new government headed by Premier Enrico Letta was being sworn in less than a kilometer away at the presidential palace. There will be more policemen, including plain-clothes officers, monitoring the event than in previous years and mingling with the crowds, according to local authority orders.
