Prosecutors say no evidence Luigi Preiti had accomplices

Gunman who shot policemen on Sunday acted alone

Rome, April 30 - The gunman who on Sunday morning shot two police officers in front of the Italian premier's office during the swearing-in ceremony of the new government less than a kilometer away, acted alone, according to Rome investigators. No further elements emerged from the preliminary probes to suggest that Luigi Preiti - whose arrest was confirmed by authorities - had any accomplices. Preiti could face charges of the attempted murder of two Carabinieri police officers, unauthorized ownership and carrying of a concealed weapon and of having acted against public officials carrying out public order duties. One of the Carabinieri officers, 50-year-old Giuseppe Giangrande, suffered damage to his spinal chord after being shot in the neck and risks paralysis.
