Rome, April 29 - Premier Enrico Letta said Monday that fighting corruption and tax evasion will be among the priorities of his new left-right government. Parties from various parts of Italy's political spectrum have been hit by corruption scandals in recent years. Letta said that fighting corruption was the only way to restore public faith in Italian justice. He added that the situation in Italy's overcrowded prisons was "intolerable". He said the government would conduct a "iron fight" against tax evasion to ensure that honest taxpayers are not the only ones to pay for efforts to restore health to the nation's public finances. But he said that this should not mean that the name of hugely unpopular tax agency Equitalia should "make people shiver".
