Letta says will try to stop VAT increase

Rome, April 29 - Premier Enrico Letta said his left-right government will work to try to avoid a 1% increase in the top band of value added tax scheduled to kick in later this year. The increase is designed to help restore health to Italy's public finances but there are fears it will further depress flagging consumer spending and deepen the recession.
