Napolitano calls for parties to unite behind new govt

(see related stories) Rome, April 27 - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on Saturday called on the country's political parties to unite behind the unprecedented left-right coalition that Enrico Letta is set to lead. "My hope is that there is maximum cohesion," Napolitano said after Letta of the Democratic Party (PD) said he had reached a deal with the longstanding enemy of his centre-left group, ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) party, for an executive to end two months of deadlock. The president added that the new government was the "fruit of a patient, tenacious effort by the premier designate (Letta) and the political parties, who chose the path of cooperation despite the predictable difficulties they faced".
