Property-tax rebate not a deal-breaker says Berlusconi

Rome, April 25 - Silvio Berlusconi's vow to refund an unpopular property tax called IMU will not be a deal-breaker in government-formation talks between his centre-right People of Freedom (PdL) Party and the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), the three-time premier said Thursday. A PD-PdL compromise platform on the economy "will not depend on any individual measure", he said, calling for a 'Save-Italy' decree for businesses and workers mired in the worst recession for 20 years. The "overall balance" of the measures will be key to the deal being brokered by PD deputy head Enrico Letta. The PD made an election pledge to lift IMU from primary residences and ease it for other property owned by the worst-off.
