Camorra mafia underground hideaway discovered near Caserta

Caserta, April 23 - Carabinieri police discovered and seized on Tuesday a subterranean hideaway used by a faction of the Casalesi clan of the Camorra mafia in the outskirts of Caserta, north of Naples. The sophisticated refuge was located under a house belonging to a 51-year-old man in the town of Villa Literno. It consisted of two small rooms, the second concealed within the first and accessible using a hydraulic device hidden in the floor. Italian journalist Roberto Saviano wrote about the Casalesi family in his 2006 bestseller Gamorrah that was later turned into a critically acclaimed film, prompting death threats from the clan and a permanent government escort.
