Cool, wet weather spreading across Italian peninsula

Heavy rainfall, snow trigger floods, avalanche warnings

Rome, April 22 - Italians who were boldly bundling their winter coats and gloves into the back of the closet last week were pulling them out Monday in the face of unseasonably cool, wet weather. Forecasters were calling for unstable weather across the peninsula through Wednesday with cool temperatures, thunderstorms and rain. Heavy snowfalls of as much as 90 centimeters were reported on the weekend in the far northern Alpine region near Turin, triggering avalanche warnings. Weekend rains and melting snow high up in the Apennines caused some flooding along the Po River in northern Italy. Conditions in the south have been forecast to improve first, with rain showers and thunderstorms expected in the centre of Italy and on Sardinia through Wednesday. By Thursday, sunny skies are expected, bringing warmer temperatures in the centre and south. However, more thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected to strike again in the north on Saturday.
