Italian president scolds parties for damaging progress

Rome, April 22 - President Giorgio Napolitano scolded warring Italian political parties for damaging progress that had been made by the outgoing technocratic government of Mario Monti during his inauguration on Monday. "So much has been too easily (and lightly) ignored or tossed out, while dissatisfaction and protest have been fed by damaging and destructive opinion campaigns," the 87-year-old head of state said. The first ex-Communist head of State was voted in Saturday after two candidates from the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) flopped in a dramatic split.
