Milan, April 22 - Lombardy's former regional councillor Domenico Zambetti was released Monday pending his trial on charges of vote-trading with the 'Ndrangheta mafia. Lawyers for Zambetti, who has been in pre-trial custody for the past six months, had argued that it wasn't necessary to keep him jailed. Last month, the prosecution called for an immediate trial for former Zambetti on charges of buying votes from the Calabrian-based 'Ndrangheta mafia, which is suspected of infiltrating Lombardy politics. Prosecutors claim Zambetti got 4,000 votes from 'Ndrangheta in exchange for 200,000 euros and several jobs as well as contract promises. Zambetti denies the charges and claims the mafia forced him to make payments and promise favours.
