President agrees to serve 2nd term after no successor chosen

Over half of Italians have confidence in Napolitano

Rome, April 22 - Re-elected Italian President Giorgio Napolitano has the support of 55% of the country according to a survey released by SWG market researchers on Monday. The online poll, which claims a 3.1% margin of error, said that 80% of center-left voters had confidence in the 87-year-old head of state and 59% of center-right voters supported him too. But only 28% of supporters of comedian Beppe Grillo's anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) backed the president. On Saturday, Napolitano agreed to serve a second term and end a situation of gridlock after five ballots failed to elect a successor.
