Napolitano will help Italy out of impasse, says EP Speaker

(see related stories) Brussels, April 20 - European Parliament Speaker Martin Schulz on Saturday thanked Italian President Giorgio Napolitano for agreeing to stand for re-election as head of state. Napolitano agreed to stand for re-election after five ballots failed to elect a successor to the 87-year-old because of rifts within the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), the biggest group in parliament. The deadlock threatened to further complicate efforts to end the political impasse Italy has endured since February's inconclusive general election as the president has a key role in orchestrating efforts to form a new government in a hung parliament. "I thank President Napolitano for having taken responsibility and his generosity in accepting to stand again to be the president of the Italian republic at such a difficult time," said Schulz. "I trust him as an institutional figure and his experience will help the country emerge from the impasse and regain stability and cohesion, which is necessary for Italy and Europe".
