Simple majority required to break stalemate

PD wants postponement, 4th ballot could be Saturday morning

Rome, April 18 - The centre-left Democratic Party on Thursday called for a postponement of the fourth ballot for Italian president, when the required majority falls from two-thirds to a simple majority. The PD asked for a postponement "by a few hours", which could mean it being put off until Saturday morning. The 1,007 'grand electors' were stalled Thursday after PD candidate Franco Marini, an ex-Senate Speaker, unexpectedly failed to muster the required majority in the first round and then the PD and Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) party cast blank ballots in the second vote. A similar vote is expected in the third ballot Friday morning.
