Florence mayor says lawmakers loyal to him won't vote Marini

PD hopeful relations with Renzi can be patched up

(see related stories on Marini) Rome, April 18 - Stefano Fassina, a senior member of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), said Thursday that he was hopeful relations with the party's outspoken mayor of Florence could be patched up before a split develops. Florence Mayor and PD rising star Matteo Renzi has publicly criticised centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani's handling of the impasse that followed February's inconclusive general election. He also said lawmakers loyal to him will not vote for the PD's candidate to be Italy's next president, Franco Marini, arguing he is a product of the tired old guard of the country's political class. "I think relations with Renzi can be patched up if everyone puts the interests of country at the centre," said Fassina, during the first ballot to elect the next head of state. However, Fassina added that: "it seems to me that not everyone has (the interests of the country at the centre), some have personal interests (there)".
