U.S. military satellite in Sicily sparks hot protests

Caltanisetta, April 10 - The planned resumption of the construction of a much-contested US military satellite communications system in the Sicilian town of Niscemi has sparked a new round of protests from local residents concerned about the environmental and health risks it could pose. The so-called "No-Muos" group, predominantly made up of mothers of local residents that are fiercely opposed to the plan to build the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) system, blocked the road leading to the military base and cut off soldiers and construction workers' access to the site. In January the region of Sicily moved to suspend the construction works after the activists blocked construction crews and later clashed with police near an American military base. The site is part of a global satellite defense network, which will aid US and NATO military operations, as well as relief efforts.
