Italy's consensus seekers to meet again Monday

'Wise men' panels could report back Thursday

Rome, April 8 - The 10 'wise men' appointed by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano to help chart a course out of the political crisis resulting from inconclusive general elections in February could report back on Thursday, according to sources at the presidential palace. The two panels of experts nominated to make consensus social, economic and institutional policy proposals were due to meet again on Monday, the president's office said. Presidential sources also confirmed that the experts, appointed at the end of March, would have "8-10 days" to come up with suggestions, meaning that a final report could be presented as early as Thursday. Napolitano appointed the 'wise men' after Democratic Party (PD) leader Pier Luigi Bersani failed to garner support for a government led by the center left. In February elections his coalition took a majority in the lower House but no party or formation won a clear majority in the equally powerful Senate, leading to a hung parliament.
