Rome statue vandalized

Rome, April 8 - A statue personifying the city of Rome in the central Piazza del Popolo has been vandalized, police said Monday. Police are reviewing surveillance tapes to find who broke the rudder from the hand of a male statue personifying the Tiber river. The sculpture is part of a composition that depicts Dea Roma (the Goddess Rome) standing between two reclining anthropomorphic statues of the Tiber and the Aniene, Rome's second-most important river. The neoclassical composition sits atop one of two early 19th-century fountains by Giovanni Ceccarini in the square.
