Italian consumer spending down again in Feb, say retailers

Rome, April 4 - Consumer spending in recession-hit Italy fell again in February, dropping 3.6% with respect to the same month in 2012, retailers association Confcommercio said Thursday. The association said the decline was part of a trend that has seen consumer demand for goods and services fall by around 25% in two year. It added that it was not optimistic about seeing a turnaround in the near future. "Signals of a possible reversal of the trend in the short term cannot be seen," Confcommercio said in a report. The only positive note was the February's level of spending was not lower than January's, according to the association.
