PD leader says a grand coalition would not serve Italy's needs

Bersani reiterates no coalition between PD and PdL

Rome, April 2 - The leader of the Democratic Party (PD) repeated Tuesday that he would not be willing to form a coalition government with ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) party. Pier Luigi Bersani, who leads the centre-left PD, reiterated that he would not govern with the centre-right PdL. Such a 'grand coalition' would be "the wrong solution to the needs of the country", he said, while voicing willingness to meet Berlusconi. Bersani had previously rejected such a coalition as he worked fruitlessly over the past week to try to muster support for a new government from among the parties elected in February.
