Rome, April 2 - Pier Luigi Bersani said Tuesday that he is willing to step aside as leader of the Democratic Party (PD) if necessary. "If I am an obstacle," he would step aside, because Italy must come first, Bersani told a news conference. The PD is holding its annual congress in October. At the same time, Bersani defended his efforts, as leader of the "first party" emerging from February's general election, to put together a new government. "We are in any case the first party, and we have put forward a proposal useful for the country". However, the PD leader's proposals to other political parties fell short of creating a new government for Italy.
