Former Communist mayor of Rome Ugo Vetere dead

Rome, April 2 - Ugo Vetere, the former mayor of Rome and a Communist politician, died late Monday at his home. Vetere, 88, was elected mayor of the Italian capital in 1981 after serving as a representative of Rome in Italy's lower house. Friends mourned the death of a municipal leader who they said was devoted to making Rome an international city, through improvements to the metro network, public schools, and programs for the elderly. "With the passing of Ugo Vetere, we lose a great mayor who looked after Rome in a time when the administrations of the left were able to revive the city, making it important in the eyes of the world," said Senator Luigi Zanda of the Democratic Party (PD).
