Italy mourns music icons Califano, Jannacci

Rome, March 31 - Italy is in mourning after the deaths in quick succession this weekend of two of its most important and best loved musical figures of the last 50 years, Enzo Jannacci and Franco Califano. Jannacci, a Milanese singer-songwriter who produced around 30 albums and soundtracks, passed away aged 77 on Friday. Califano, who often sang in Roman dialect, was famed for being a lady's man and had two spells in prison after drugs arrests in 1970 and 1984 before being cleared in both cases, died on Saturday. Both men had been ill for some time. Several of the headlines in the media announcing Califano's death referred to the title of his 1976 hit Tutto il Resto è Noia (All the Rest is Boredom), his most famous song. photo: Franco Califano.
