Uffizi calls for area of vandalised statue to be sectioned

(see related story) Florence, March 29 - Florence's Uffizi Museum on Friday called for the Loggia dei Lanzi area of the central Piazza della Signoria to be sectioned so that access can be limited, after a finger was removed from Pio Fedi's Rape of Polyxena in the latest act of vandalism against the statue. ''We need to section off the Loggia dei Lanzi and allow only controlled access, not free access, as has been the case up to now. Perhaps it is even the case to close it off at night, Uffizi Director Antonio Natali said. ''It's not the first time something like this has happened, and we need to find a protection system so that these events are not repeated''. The statue is undergoing repair after an English-speaking female tourist broke off its left index finger before being stopped by local municipal police.
