Bersani fails to break stalemate

Rome, March 28 - Italian centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani told President Giorgio Napolitano that he gave up his bid to cobble together a government after six days of consultations with party leaders, business and labour groups. Bersani told Napolitano that "these days of work have brought no resolution". Napolitano last week gave Bersani a mandate to try to form a new executive as his coalition came first in last month's inconclusive general election, although it did not win a working majority in the Senate. Media pundits speculated that Bersani's chances of success were slim.
